  18. <p>     1984 federal law allowed police agencies to keep assets
  19. seized from drug traffickers and money launderers. But not, of
  20. course, for personal use. Last week six members of an elite Los
  21. Angeles County sheriff's narcotics squad were convicted of
  22. conspiring to steal $48,000. They were acquitted of larceny on
  23. a grander scale: spending $1.4 million in confiscated cash on
  24. luxury cars, boats, jewelry and vacation homes.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     The convicted officers may be only the first to fall in a
  27. widening corruption investigation that has tarnished the once
  28. squeaky-clean image of Los Angeles law-enforcement agencies.
  29. Dozens of narcotics agents from both the sheriff's office and
  30. the city police department are suspects. The probe began two
  31. years ago, after a deputy's wife tipped off Sheriff Sherman
  32. Block to the thefts. Block disbanded four of his narcotics
  33. teams and suspended 26 deputies, including some of his most
  34. decorated veterans.
